Lost in the Plot

Well, Chicken Little is about to open in the US, and they’re understandably looking at this as the beginning of their “new era” in animation. Behind the scenes of course, they’re keenly aware that how this film performs will have a significant impact on their animation business, and as many are noting, may make or break their stance on a Pixar deal.
Most interestingly, I was saddened to hear Randy Fullmer (tradional animator at Disney for years, Producer of Emperor’s New Groove) comment to a Chicago Sun-Times columnist Cindy Pearlman that “You show kids two-dimensional [hand-drawn] animation, and they act like you’re showing them a black-and-white movie,” he said. For someone who worked on The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, this shows a very sad neglect for what makes hand-drawn animation so warm, successful and unreplaceable.
