Thanks to Francis for dropping me a note about this bit of news- looks like as of yesterday Autodesk Inc. (3DS Max, Flame, Smoke, Inferno) will be acquiring Alias Systems Corp. (Maya). The things you can buy for $182 million in cash never ceases to amaze. Very interesting, I wonder if there’ll be any noticeable impact on customers considering they now own two 3D packages - is this really viable or desireable for a company? They say they don’t plan to eliminate any products from either company at this stage, deeming 3DSMax & Maya complimentary to one another, though they do mention that the Alias brand name will be replaced by Autodesk. I guess they want us all to look forward to the kind of benefits that the Macromedia/Adobe merger might bring. We’ll see…
